Learn to lead yoga with babies and their caregivers

Breathing Space Family Yoga is a children’s and family yoga studio on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. We teach yoga to babies and their caregivers every week, and we train the adults who work with young families to lead it themselves.

This two-day intensive is the in-person part of our Baby Yoga & Play Teacher Training. Over the weekend, you try the activities yourself, practice teaching them, and plan lessons. The training prepares you to lead classes for caregivers and babies from newborn to crawling, in a studio or in your own setting, and to welcome babies into postnatal classes.

A baby’s first relationships teach them whether the world is safe. When you help a caregiver read and respond to their baby, you strengthen that relationship from the start. We do this work to make a difference in children’s lives, and for a baby, that starts with the adults who hold them.

Workshop Hours
Friday: 4:30–9:30 pm
Saturday: 10 am–7 pm

What you learn

  • Infant development. How pre-crawling babies develop physically and neurologically, how movement supports that development, and what the move from baby yoga to Tot Yoga looks like.
  • Reading the baby. How babies signal engagement, overstimulation, hunger, fatigue, and readiness for more before they talk, and how to respond when a baby cries, resists a pose, or keeps rolling over to watch the other babies.
  • The class arc. An opening ritual, back poses and warm-ups, tummy time, bouncing and standing poses, a wind-down, and relaxation for caregiver and baby alike. You learn the purpose of each part and how to adjust when the babies have other plans.
  • Supporting the caregiver. How to guide parents on holding, moving, and when to stop, plus postpartum recovery and how to support the adults in the room.
  • Props, songs, and class design. Props, songs, rhymes, and sensory activities used with purpose, and how to plan one class for a room where a newborn and a five-month-old practice side by side.
  • Baby yoga and postnatal yoga. How to teach dedicated baby yoga classes and postnatal classes where babies join in.

Who this training is for
Postpartum doulas, lactation consultants, infant massage educators, early childhood teachers, occupational therapists, social workers, family support workers, and anyone who works with families of young infants. You teach the caregivers: each parent holds and moves their own baby while you guide every pose. You do not need experience teaching yoga. We strongly recommend a personal practice.

Continuing toward certification
